Dons answer critics in style

Aberdeen had the perfect answer to their critics with a wonderful display at Rugby Park. The win was the Dons first at Kilmarnock since 1995 and was well deserved. Goals from Zdrilic and Tosh gave the visitors the lead at the interval and when Booth added a third after the break the Rugby Park hoodoo was finally buried. Kilmarnock managed a late consolation, but couldn't deny the rampant Dons all three points in what was their best display of the season.

Aberdeen made a positive start to the match and Booth and Zdrilic both had half chances in the opening minute. The two combined to produce the opener in the third minute when Booth turned his marker well before finding Zdrilic six yards out. The Aussie calmly slotted the ball past Dubourdeau to give Aberdeen a dream start. Four minutes later Sheerin tried his luck from long range but the keeper easily saved the effort.

Kilmarnock should have levelled in the 10th minute when Boyd met a Hessey cross at the far post. Fortunately the Killie man screwed his header well wide of the target with only Preece to beat. The home side were to regret that miss five minutes later when Tosh went on a solo run deep into the heart of the home defence and fired the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. The Dons were now flying and Zdrilic was unlucky not to grab a third in the 22nd minute when he fired an effort off the cross bar following good build up play by Muirhead.

Kilmarnock had another escape on the half hour mark when McNaughton scraped the post after being picked out by Zdrilic. Kilmarnock had a rare venture forward in the 39th minute, but Invincible was well wide with his effort. Three minutes later Sheerin sent a shot inches wide after being set up by the impressive Tosh. Just on half time Booth tried to lob the keeper, but he was alert to the danger and the home side were glad to hear the half time whistle go.

The Dons wrapped up the points within three minutes of the restart when Booth fired in a third and decisive start following good build up play from McNaughton and Tosh. Muirhead picked up a nasty knock in the 49th minute in a rash challenge. The youngster required lengthy treatment, but the match official was happy to let the challenge go unpunished. On the hour mark Anderson picked up a knock and was replaced by Diamond.

Killie went close in the 64th minute forcing Preece to make a fine save from a headed effort in a crowded area. The home side did eventually grab a consolation in the 68th minute when a free kick was headed on to the bar by Dindeleux and Nish turned the loose ball into the net. The Dons had loud appeals for a spot kick two minutes later when Booth released Zdrilic and the Aussie appeared to be pulled to the ground as he rounded the keeper. The referee ignored the appeals and awarded a corner kick.

Aberdeen comfortably controlled the game and held out for a deserved win in what was easily their finest performance of the season. They could have added to their tally, but everyone at Pittodrie is delighted with the outcome and hopes that this is a taster for the rest of the season.
