Aberdeen kicked off, but it was the Irish side who threatened first. With four minutes on the clock, Molloy beat the offside trap and sent a shot just wide of Essons left hand post. Aberdeen were trying to build slowly, but the final ball was always a big let down. The Dons finally won their first corner in the 16th minute, but a weak delivery from Jess summed up the Dons efforts. Two minutes later, Darren Young was booked for the third time in as many games after a strong tackle.
The visitors should have taken the lead at the start of the second half when Molloy worked his way into the box. However, instead of cutting the ball back too his eager teammates, the centre forward decide to try and beat Esson himself. This seemed to wake the Dons out of their apathy and in the 52nd minute a fine cross from Dow was glanced wide by Rowson. Several other half chances followed before the Dons broke the deadlock on the hour mark. Winters darted between two defenders to latch on to a fine Dow pass and leave Russell helpless. Aberdeen had their best spell of the match after this with Jess starting to run the show. Derek Young replaced a rather ineffective Zerouali in the 65th minute, with Clark replacing an equally ineffective Stavrum 15 minutes later. Jess had a great strike in the 70th minute, which just crept over the bar, and Winters was through on the keeper only to be denied by a fine save.
The Dons paid the ultimate penalty for these misses when Bohemian equalised in the 82nd minute. A corner on the left was headed powerfully into the net by centre half, Sean Maher. Belabed replaced Dow in the 88th minute but worse was to follow a few seconds later when Perry, looking slow and cumbersome, tripped O?Keefe in the box. The ref had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick and Molloy made no mistake. This must rank as one of Aberdeens poorest performances in Europe.
