Aberdeen 0-2 Inverness CT

Aberdeen lost 2-0 in a poor performance today at Pittodrie. Inverness deserved all three points against an Aberdeen side that lacked a cutting edge. It was ICT's first ever victory over the Dons.

The dons lined up in a 4-4-2 formation for the first game of the new campaign against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Scott Severin played alongside Andrew Considine at the back. Foster right back and Mulgrew on the left. As expected McDonald and Kerr partnered each other in midfield with de Visscher wide right and Smith on the left. Chris Maguire was the player chosen to partner Lee Miller up front.

Jimmy Calderwood's men were on the attack from the off and Mark Kerr's dangerous drilled cross in the 1st minute had no takers. Aberdeen had another early chance in the 2nd minute after Mulgrew's long ball was headed on by Miller to Maguire whose left foot volley flew wide of Fraser's goal.

It was a positive start from the Dons with Foster and De Visscher linking well on the right. In the 4th minute Maguire found some space wide on the right but his cross eluded everyone and drifted harmlessly out for a throw in. It took 10 minutes for Inverness to make their first impact on the game when Barrowman created some space but his cross was over hit for the onrushing Cowie.

The visitors gained some confidence from this and a neat move involving Tokely and black finished with Barrowman heading towards goal but Langfield easily gathered. In the 18th minute Mulgrew overstretched for a ball and allowed Imrie to race away on the right side but again Caley lacked the support in the box.

Aberdeen almost snatched the lead in the 21st minute when a dangerous Smith cross was met with a timely and brave header out for a corner by Munro with Miller lurking in behind. The resultant Smith corner reached Severin whose volley saw Imrie clear off the line. A minute later Kerr knocked a defence splitting pass through for De Visscher whose half volley was saved low by Fraser and out for a corner.

In the 29th minute Caley took the lead against the run of play. Tokely found space wide on the right and his cross evaded the Dons defence leaving the onrushing BARROWMAN the simplest of finishes at the back post. Aberdeen pressed forward looking for the equaliser and when Mulgrew released Maguire in the 32nd minute he took Tokely to the bye line before floating a ball into the box which Fraser gathered. Jamie Smith was next to try his luck in the 34th minute when he beat Tokely out on the touchline but the resultant cross was cleared for a corner.

De Visscher was then fouled 25 yards from goal by Black. Mulgrew stepped up to take the kick but his effort couldn't beat the wall.

Jimmy Calderwood made a change at the interval by bringing on Mackie for De Visscher and moving young Maguire out to the left hand side of midfield.

The first chance of the second half came immediately when Mulgrew's header was blocked from a Smith corner.

In the 49th minute substitute Mackie had the chance to make a perfect start to his season when Kerr found him with a clever ball but he screwed his shot wide from 12 yards. Caley almost added to their lead when Foster gifted possession to McBain, he in turn fed Imrie who cut in and drilled a 20 yard left foot shot which crept wide of Langfield's post. A 61st minute neat exchange from Maguire and Mulgrew wide on the left resulted in Mulgrew's cross getting blocked for a corner.

Fraser raced out of his goals out wide but was beaten to the ball by Miller, he turned and found Smith whose fierce left foot shot flew over Fraser's bar.

Aberdeen made a second substitution in the 65th minute when Young came on to replace the frustrated Maguire.

The Don's almost shot themselves in the foot in the 67th minute when Langfield dallied on Foster's pass back before slicing a clearance straight to the feet of Imrie who had a clear sight of goal. He should have done better with his 18 yard shot which flew over a relieved Langfield's goal.

A great run and cross from Young in the 68th minute was cleared out for a throw by a panicking Munro. Considine became the first player to go in the book when he was yellow carded in the 72nd minute for a late tackle on Black.

Diamond replaced Kerr with fifteen minutes to go allowing Severin to move into the centre of midfield for a late Don's push.

Inverness thought they had sewn up the game in the 81st minute when Imrie's cross was headed back by Barrowman to Mcbain who slotted home. The Assistant flag for offside and the celebrations were short-lived.

A long ball from defence found Mackie free in the box in the 83rd minute but his attempt at goal was blocked by combined efforts Fraser and Munro who charged down his effort and the ball went out for a corner. A great opportunity missed.

Inverness replaced Black with Wilson in the 86th minute as they looked to close the game out and in 87 minutes Tokely was booked for a late tackle on Young.

As Aberdeen pressed for an equaliser they piled players forward for a 90th minute corner which broke down. They were then hit with a sucker punch when Imrie broke free and released McBAIN who blasted home from 18 yards with his right foot sparking scenes of celebration and the three points were in the bag for a hard working Inverness team.

Miller was booked late on and McAllister replaced Barrowman for the away side as the game drew to a close.

Loud boos accompanied the final whistle as Inverness celebrated their first ever win over the Dons. A very disappointing start to the new campaign.
