Quick double sinks Dons as they Rue Missed Chances

Aberdeen suffered their second SPL defeat of the season in atrocious conditions at Pittodrie. The Dons were rueing a couple of missed chances after United scored twice in four minutes. Fyvie should have scored in the opening minute when he collected a long clearance from Langfield and went one-on-one with Weaver, but fired wide. Miller then had a clear chance in the 25th minute when he controlled a pass from Paton, beat Dods then fired wide when it looked easier to score. Both players appeared to show great composure, but the finish eluded them. United then struck in the 31st minute and 35th minute for a flattering 2-0 lead that they never looked like relinquishing.

Dundee United kicked off in the wind, rain and plummeting temperature. Aberdeen warmed the crowd in the first minute when Fraser Fyvie should have fired the Dons ahead. The youngster latched on to a long clearance from Langfield, outpaced his marker and went one-on-one with Weaver. Fyvie looked composed and beat the keeper, but also beat the left hand post. United fired wide in the 5th minute, but both teams were struggling with the adverse weather conditions.

Dillon fed Cadamarteri in the 8th minute and Langfield did well to narrow the angle and the United man hit the far post. The visitor's were enjoying good possesion at this stage and the Dons had some defending to do. Miller tried a snap shot in the 12th minute that skidded wide then United won the first corner of the match in the 16th minute, but Langfield commanded his area well. A minute later Pawlett and Ross combined well then Mulgrew tried a shot from distance, but Weaver showed safe hands.

A good cross from Foster was missed by everyone before a Mulgrew free kick on the left disappointed. A second United corner followed in the 22nd minute and Kenneth headed over from 8 yards. Aberdeen should have taken the lead in the 25th minute when Paton fed Miller. The striker set himself up beautifully as he controlled the ball, side stepped Dods then fired wide from 7 yards out. Langfield was back in action on the half hour mark when he turned a Cadamarteri shot round the post.

From the subsequent corner United went ahead as the ball bobbled around the penalty area and it was turned in by Casalinuovo. Aberdeen tried to hit back immediately and Miller volleyed over inside a crowded box. United won another corner in the 34th minute and as the Dons struggled to clear their lines United added a second when Gomis swept the ball past Langfield from the edge of the box. The striker was booked when he ran to the travelling support.

Another United corner followed as the Dons looked stunned after missing two simple chances earlier in the match. Weaver grabbed the ball at the feet of Miller in the 41st minute after Ross had supplied a great cross. Two minutes later Pawlett pounced on an error from United and he tried to place the ball into the net, but Weaver made an easy save. On the stroke of half time Kerr had a couple of half chances, but couldn't finish as the Dons finished on the attack.

The wind and rain continued to swirl around Pittodrie as the match restarted and it was almost a disaster for the Dons in the opening minute as Myrie-Williams fired inches wide of the target with a fierce shot. A minute later another defensive lapse conceded another corner after Kerr had given the ball away on the edge of his own box. Aberdeen needed to stand firm, but they were struggling to clear their lines as United tried to kill the game.

Mulgrew attempted to release Miller in the 50th minute, but an offside flag ended that move and United headed back up field and won another corner that was headed wide by Kenneth. A minute later a Mulgrew cross drifted wide as Aluko prepared to enter the fray. Both Aluko and Maguire were introduced in place of Pawlett and Paton with 55 minutes gone. Two minutes later Ifil made a telling tackle to keep United at bay, but a minute later the visitor's won another corner and once again Kenneth headed wide.

A Dons free kick on the hour mark came to nothing as Miller headed over then Aluko, who had been having some luck on the left, whipped in a cross that was cut out by Weaver, Aberdeen won a corner in the 67th minute and Weaver missed the ball, but Considine headed wide. A second corner followed a minute later as Weaver struggled with a Mulgrew cross and scrambled the ball wide. The corner was too heavy and went out of play and a minute later Kerr was cautioned for a late tackle,

Two corners from Aberdeen failed to produce the opening and in the 73rd minute Mackie replaced Foster, Mackie won a corner within a minute, but once again the Dons couldn't break the United defence. A Charlie Mulgrew free kick went high over the bar in the 76th minute as time started to slip away. A confusing incident ended with Myrie-Williams being booked, but the Dons were making no in roads. This was highlighted in the 80th minute when Aluko was inches wide of the target with Miller sliding in to try and convert.

Another two corners in the 83rd minute failed to change matters as Aberdeen continued to try and find a way through. Maguire set up Mackie three minutes later, but Weaver was out quick to make the block. Dods and Miller were booked in the late stages after the United defender looked to make a meal of a challenge. Fyvie collected a caution in injury time as the game petered out and Aberdeen suffered their second SPL defeat of the season.
