Northern League Notes

And now a word as to the Aberdeen v. Cowdenbeath match. Our "Special Commissioner" has got tired following the Aberdeen, and at the twelfth hour absolutely refused to travel to Cowdenbeath. But we must have something to say, and in a hasty glance we have had of the papers, we can find nothing better than the following criticism from the Dundee Courier. "The Fifers had the pleasure of witnessing the best game that has been played at Cowdenbeath this season. Aberdeen's visit was looked forward to with interest, and the bad weather did not lessen the interest. The first position of the game belonged to Cowdenbeath, but in the second half the Aberdeen came away, and gave as much as they got. Their combination was a treat to look at, but on no account would Nisbet and Fitz let them through. These two were instrumental in no small way in the defeat of the Aberdeen. Although Aberdeen were playing an excellent game, Cowdenbeath forwards were in ripping good form, McAughy on the right being a decided success. His dash seemed to inspire his fellows, and they went at it tooth and nail, until they were leading by three goals. After this Aberdeen pressed, and Stoddart scraped out at the foot of the upright. No one thought it was a goal, not even the players themselves, but Mr. Nicol pointed his finger to the centre of the field. This roused the players, and from that time onward, Aberdeen scarcely crossed midfield. Truly, Cowdenbeath played a wonderful game. Every individual was in perfect form, and Aberdeen, smart though they were, and a really first class football team, were in the shade when compared to Cowdenbeath. The game was full of good points. There was no rough play, there was not a slack minute in the game from beginning to end. Excitement was keen, and the football was grand, and that was putting it mildly."

These teams met in a Northern League fixture at Cowdenbeath in dull weather, but before a good turnout of spectators. Owing to the recent heavy rains the ground was in a somewhat greasy state. The teams lined up as follows:- Aberdeen: Barrett; McGregor, McNicol; Low, Strang, Ritchie; Shinner, McAulay, Mackie, Shiach, Johnstone. Cowdenbeath: Stoddart; Fitzpatrick, Nisbet; Orrock, Hamilton, Beveridge; McAughey, Dryburgh, mercer, Cowie, McFarlane. Referee - Mr. Nicol, Arbroath.

The Aberdonians started the game, but Cowdenbeath were first to become dangerous, Cowie sending in a good shot, which was just a trifle wide. A corner kick against the Aberdonians was well placed, and, after Barrett had saved three shots in rapid succession, he was beat all the way by McAughey. Play was fast and interesting, first the one goal, and then the other being in danger. Beveridge was playing a great game for Cowdenbeath, and was repeatedly cheered for his tackling. Right on to the interval the game was well contested.

On resuming, McAughey sent in several well-directed shots, and eventually found the net, Mercer soon after adding another goal. The game became very fast as time drew near, and Aberdeen scored.
