Aberdeen 0 - 2 Hibernian

Played at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, in miserable weather, rain falling almost continuously throughout the game. The Hibernians were without Allan, and Callaghan assumed the role of goalkeeper.
Aberdeen faced the wind and rain in the first half, and were mostly kept on the defensive. The Hibs forwards were full of running, and showed some clever footwork despite the deplorable conditions. Hendron headed through from a corner placed by Thorburn, and there was no more scoring up to the interval. In the second period Aberdeen improved and had more of the play, but their attack was weak near goal. Callaghan saved a number of good shots. The Hibernians were repeatedly dangerous, and Fleming scored again three minutes from time. Result:- Hibernians, 2 goals; Aberdeen, 0.

Neither the weather nor the attendance held out much encouragement to the opening home game in the Inter-City League yesterday, when Hibs opposed Aberdeen in that competition. We'll there was a mere handful of spectators present when the teams lined up. Aberdeen were to have tried a new centre forward, but he did not put in an appearance, and Walker was again played, Carrigan, the A's inside right, being played as partner to Soye.

Aberdeen lost the toss, and kicked off in a downpour of rain. Danger to the home goal threat and ultimately from the right and left wings of the Greens, and Hannah and Colman were prominent with timely clearances. Walker brought relief to Aberdeen, and Carrigan was the first to test the Hibs' stopgap goalkeeper with a long ground shot. Thereafter played ruled in midfield, promising movements by the forwards being nullified by equally good defensive work on the part of the defences. Soye and Carrigan forced the pace on the Aberdeen right, but their work was not a serious menace to the Irish defence. Much more dangerous was ahead Birnie and Reid, led on by Thorburn. He and Hannah had a rear tussle near the corner flag, and relief was got by Colman going to his partner's assistance. Bell burst through, and had a find try, which went just high of the mark.
Up when Hibs' properly took up the running the gave Aberdeen a lively chase, and Paterson had a splendid drive which King saved. Aberdeen, somehow, could not strike a good vein, and, compared to the smooth working attack of the Irishmen, their efforts were disjointed and broken. Hannah effected some brilliant clearances, and resume easily the most prominent defender on the field. Much danger came from the Hibs' left.
Hibs opened the scoring. Hendren forced a corner off Wilson, and from the flag kick he headed through. After this Hannah forced the pace for Aberdeen, but Neilson muddled the backs pass, with the result that Hibs were given another loophole, and Bell arrest King to no purpose. The weakness of Neilson lost Aberdeen several likely chances of making ground. On one occasion Hendren was almost through again, when King saved at the last moment. Hibs showed by far the smarter footwork, and the Aberdeen defence had far more to do and had the Easter Road rear division. A good combined run by the visiting forwards so Hendren walking the ball through again, when Wilson kicked it from before him. The occasions that Aberdeen threatened danger were few, and Callaghan only twice handled the ball in the first half. On the other hand, King was kept quite busy. Girdwood had a great long drive, which went just wide, and King had to exert himself to clear from Fleming. Following upon a corner, forced by the right, Hibs again got the ball in the net, but "hands" against Fleming nullified the point. Two wards the interval the downpour increased, and many of the spectators left the field. Hibs were easily value for their lead.

There was a perfect water-spout when the second half commenced. Pools of water quickly gathered on the field, and a lot of the bedraggled players was anything but a happy one. Travers headed a fine raid on Callaghan, but the Hibs were all out to defend. The first real excitement of the half was provided when King rushed out and saved with Bell and Hendren in attendance. Wilson had a good try for Aberdeen, and Callaghan caused some amusement by his unorthodox save with his feet. Aberdeen continued to make an attack on the Hibs' lead, and Neilson, when well placed for a shot, lifted high over the bar. When King threw himself at hand misjudged a shot from the Hibs' left matters looked ominous for Aberdeen, but only two corners followed.
Aberdeen continued to be at sixes and sevens, and the Hibs' defence had never much difficulty in stemming their spasmodic rushes. Walker was successful in forcing a corner after no fewer than six had fallen to Hibs, but from the flag Soye sent the ball half away to the mid-way line. Hibs had much the better of the ensuing stages, and looked as if they might even increase their lead.
There was a long period during which neither goalkeeper was tested. Aberdeen took their turn of attacking, but they never served up convincing football. Thorburn gave King a good hard drive from near the touch line, and the goalkeeper cleared and no more. Soye burst off on his own, and, although pursued and harassed by two opponents, he got in his shot, but the ball struck Callaghan. Following upon this, Soye had another good shot, which Callaghan head against the upright, and the ball rebounded clear. Except for good efforts by Soye and travers, Aberdeen did not look like equalising. Just on time Fleming scored again for the visitors.
