DONS FAR AHEAD OF IBROX XI.
TWELVE thousand spectators saw Aberdeen register a well-earned victory over Rangers in the North-Eastern League at Pittodrie by four goals to two. Aberdeen were ahead of the Ibrox team in all phases of the game. Rangers' two goals were more or less gifts. The first was the result of bad covering up, and the second resulted from the ball striking Dunlop and swerving past the goalkeeper. All Aberdeen's four goals were well taken. The Aberdeen defence was at its best, and there were long spells when Rangers were scarcely in the home territory. Once again the middle division paved the way for victory. Dunlop and G. Taylor were in great form on the wings, while Smith, the Rangers centre, was blotted out by Gavin. Dryden was the Dons best forward. Pattillo, although always harassing the visiting defence, was not at his best. Hamilton and Gourlay worked tremendously hard, while Taylor, although not too fit, performed some good work. Rangers must have been grateful that they had such a pivot as Woodburn. He gave a brilliant display and saved his team from a much heavier defeat.Source: Press & Journal, 28th September 1942
