Aberdeen A journeyed to Montrose on Saturday and met Montrose in a Northern League fixture. The teams were:- Montrose: Towns; Valentine, Crabbe; Gowans, Hannah, Campbell; Esson, McNiff, McLachlan, Keillor, Fairley. Aberdeen: Barrett; Willox, Brebner; Low, Thomson, Robertson; Harvey, Cruickshank, G. McNicol, Jaffrey.
The Aberdonians won the toss, and Montrose kicked off westwards. After a quarter of an hour's play, Crabbe fouled Cruickshank when the ball was going past, and Aberdeen scored from a penalty. Two minutes later Caie added a second goal. Aberdeen had the best of matters, and the Montrose defence was kept busy. Play a little later became more equal. Esson succeeded in getting the leather past Barrett. Caie, before the call of half-time, scored with a smart shot.
Montrose, on resuming, made an effort to reduce their opponents' lead, but the Aberdeen defence was too strong for them. Harvey had a capital run, but sent past. A change was tried, Valentine going forward, Keillor half, and Hannah back. It made matters worse instead of better, for after Cruickshank had given Towns the hardest shot seen on the park for a long time, he sent in a grounder which gave the goalkeeper no chance. Aberdeen had the best of matters until the close, and won on their merits.
