Flag Day for Sailors at Aberdeen

In connection with King George's Fund for Sailors, to which subscriptions of about £2000 have been given locally, a flag day was held in Aberdeen on Saturday. Ladies from a pantomime and a revue appearing in the city were amongst the collectors. A football match was played at Pittodrie between Aberdeen and an International Army Eleven, who were beaten by four goals to three. By the sale of flags the sum of £255 was realised, and with £37 from the football match, the day's total was £292.

The game between a British Army XI and Aberdeen at Pittodrie proved thoroughly attractive. After leading at the interval by a goal the military representatives had to acknowledge defeat to the extent of four goals to three. Jock Wylie with three goals and Roberson with one, against two secured by Gordon and McCandlish put the game beyond doubt. Gordon, Brewster, Colman and McIntosh excelled in a clever eleven, while Aberdeen's best were Wylie, Duffus and McDonald.

Teams:- British Army - Sergeant Hendry; Sapper Colman and Segeant McIntosh (Hearts)l; Private McMaster (Celtic), Sapper Brewster and Private Smith (Hibs); Private Scott (Hearts), Sergeant Miller (Hearts), Sergeant Gordon (Rangers), Second Lieutenant Grosert (Hibs), and Private McCandlish (Hibs)
Aberdeen - Anderson; A. McRobbie and Hampton; Crichton, Duffus (Dundee), and McDonald (Dundee); Herron (Dundee), Walter, Wylie, Robertson and Gordon

An enjoyable game was witnessed at Pittodrie between teams representing the Aberdeen Club and the British Army, on behalf of King George's Fund for Sailors. The weather was pleasant, and there was a fairly large attendance. Both sides were strong, players being on the field from the following clubs - Aberdeen, Dundee, Hearts, Swindon, Hibs, Rangers and Celtic.

From the kick-off Aberdeen pressed for two or three minutes, but the Army afterwards made progress and two corners from the second of which Gordon scored seven minutes from the start. Sergt. Gordon had another excellent attempt for pointage, and at the other end Robertson and Walker had both good tries for Aberdeen, but were just a little wide of the mark. Until the interval play continued interesting, both sides doing good work, but no further scoring took place.

The Army raided on resumption, and end-to-end play ensued. Following an exciting passage in front of Anderson, Aberdeen invaded and Wyllie equalised. The Army were soon on the ascendancy again, Gordon scoring a second goal. There was a crop of goals within the last half-hour. First Wyllie equalized, and then the army again got on the lead, McCandless doing the needful. Robertson levelled matters, however, and in the closing minutes Wyllie scored his third point of the afternoon, and gave his side victory.

The band of the Gordon Highlanders gave selections before the kick-off and at the interval.
