In the absence of a Premier Reserve League fixture last Saturday, Deveronvale's invitation to send an Aberdeen team to Princess Royal Park on Sunday for a testimonial match for Vale's long-serving utility player Nigel Montgomery was doubly welcome.
As well as giving the Pittodrie club an opportunity to pay a deserved tribute to a player who has rendered yeoman service to North football - in the course of a 14-year association with the Banff club, Montgomery has made over 300 appearances, scored almost 50 goals, and played, at one time or another, in every position including goalkeeper - the game provided the Dons with valuable match practice for players who might otherwise have had an idle weekend.
The regular reserve squad was reinforced for the occasion by a number of recognised first-team men and the opportunity was also taken to use no fewer than five substitutes in the second half.
Against a Vale team which included some of Montgomery's former as well as current team-mates, Aberdeen scored a decisive 3-0 win, and - more mportantly- produced an entertaining display of football in the progress.
The first half yielded only a single goal, scored by Hugh Robertson in the 11th minute, but a number of other scoring chances were created and Scott Booth and Martin Hick could also have figured on the scoresheet. Three substitutions were made at the interval, Kevin Christie, Colin Milne and lain Nisbet replacing Stephen Wright, Booth and Derek Adams respectively, while two further changes saw Tommy Corkan and David Rowson take over from Graham Watson and Scott Thomson in the closing stages. Before going off, however, Thomson headed Aberdeen's second goal from a Jim Bett corner kick and just before the final whistle Milne claimed the third, following a Robertson cut-back.
