DISMISSED FROM CUP BY HEARTS
On the run of play the Tynecastle reserve team was lucky to reach the second round of the Scottish 2nd XI. Cup at Pittodrie. but it must be borne in mind that they took their chances whereas the home team lacked a player who could shoot near goal. In an attempt to pull the game out of the fire the homesters twice changed their attack in the second half, but all to no purpose. There was a surprise in the first five minutes when Phillips put the visitors ahead. He fastened on after Graham had miskicked, and ran from midfield to shoot from close range. Kelly parried this effort but the inside man gained possession, and sent into the empty net. The homesters received another nasty shock ten minutes from half-time when McGhee netted a second for Hearts. His first shot rebounded from a defender, but at the second attempt he sent into the net via a post. Just on the half-time whistle Brady was pulled down the penalty area, and he took the kick himself to score. Throughout the second half the homesters tried hard to score, but Hearts' defence stood firm. Best for the homesters were Kelly, Laing, Scott, Hume, and Brady. Hearts were well served by Pope. McDonald, Johnstone, Miller, and Rennie.Source: Press & Journal, 16th January 1939
