LAST-MINUTE SLACKNESS COST ABERDEEN "A" POINT
After they had appeared to have the game well in hand the Aberdeen side slackened off in the closing stages of this Reserve League game at Pittodrie, and Falkirk seized their chance to save a point. The match seldom rose to great heights. Included in the home team were two English amateurs. For the bulk of the first half the homesters did the attacking, but time after time they were defied by the splendid goalkeeping of Wilson. There were times when the 'keeper had luck on his side, and twice he must have been glad to see fierce drives by the home outside right, a trialist, flash wide of the goal. Young was the only Falkirk forward to cause Kelly any anxiety in this half. The game had hardly restarted when the Englishman at inside left for the Dons accepted a slip from Williams and netted as the 'keeper ran out. A second goal came soon afterwards, Armstrong accurately heading home a cross by Williams, who had worked out to the right. But Falkirk were not done with, and when a slip by Fleming caught the defenders out of position Young ran on to whip a lovely shot into the corner of the net. Slackness in the home defence also led to the equalising goal by the left winger, who sent the ball home in a scramble. Kelly was safe in the home goal, and Cooper at right back is evidently fully recovered. Robey showed improvement at left back, but Grant was the only halfback to impress. The English trialist at outside right looked dangerous in the first half, but later was neglected by Hume, who had not good game. Without taking undue risks Armstrong demonstrated his fitness, while Williams and the other Englishman at inside left caused most trouble to the visitors. For Falkirk "A" Wilson, Trotter, McPhee, Duffy and Young were best.Source: Press & Journal, 13th February 1939
