Aberdeen "A" Have to Fight for Three-Goal Win
QUALIFYING MATCH IN DEWAR SHIELD
Aberdeen "A" were made to fight for success in the first of the home-and-home games of the qualifying stage of the Dewar Shield competition at Pittodrie on Saturday. Keith gave a plucky display, but although they claimed almost an equal share of the play once they settled down, they did not succeed in opening their account. The reason was that they could not get properly to close quarters. Their raids, too, never looked as dangerous as those of the homesters. The Young Dons gave a good display, all the more so as they played most of the game with only ten men. About fifteen minutes from the start McIvor, their left-half, was injured and had to he carried off. He did not return, and it was stated that the injury which had kept him from playing for several months had been aggravated. Westland had a quiet day in goal, and he was well covered by two safe backs in Temple and Urquhart. Devine was the outstanding halfback, while Ritchie Smith, on whom devolved the whole work of the left wing after McIvor was taken off, was always dangerous. Keith were best served in defence. Muldownie gave a sterling display in goal. Mitchell was the better of the backs, while Oliphant and Cowie shone at half-back. The Young Dons went into the lead after eight minutes, Bain finding the net. The second half was about twenty minutes old when Ritchie Smith put them further ahead, and near the close Scott completed the scoring.Source: Press & Journal, 20th April 1936
