The inclusion of players in the process of recovering their fitness and the loss of others because of first team squad calls has caused a degree of inconsistency in the second team ranks but despite this the defence of the title has continued encouragingly.
A 2-1 home win over Morton, after trailing 1-0 at half-time was sandwiched between defeats by Celtic at Parkhead and Hearts at Pittodrie.
Davie Dodds played in the Morton game on his way to returning to first team action a week later at Tynecastle while David Robertson returned to Premier Reserve League action in the Hearts game. Missed chances was the main problem as the win over Morton was restricted to one goal, a surprising deficiency in the light of Dodds' return and the fact that Paul Wright has looked in promising form since his return from Chile.
Another factor working against the Dons was that Morton benefited from a bad defensive mistake midway through the first half when a cross from the left was deflected into a dangerous position and the opposition cashed in.
It was Alan Selbie who eventually scored the equaliser after a long spell in which Morton, enjoying their unexpected lead, had the bit between their teeth.
'We were well on top for much of the game but just couldn't get the ball into the net despite creating quite a few chances,' explained coach Teddy Scott.
Eventually the decider came from Brian Irvine midway through the second-half to give Dons what looked like a narrow victory but which could and should have been by a wider margin.
