Highland League club Keith found themselves facing a most formidable set of Dons in their semi-final replay of the Aberdeen-shire Cup at Pittodrie.
The inclusion of Alex McLeish, Davie Dodds and Jim Bert meant that it was no real surprise that we reached last Wednesday's Final against Peterhead here (more about that in the next issue). McLeish and Dodds were able to play because the rules of the competition allowed for it despite the fact that the pair were under suspension from first team duties. This made it a most welcome exercise for them if a somewhat daunting prospect for Keith.
Bett was included to help him back to match fitness after the back injury which forced him, among other things, to pull out of the Scotland international trip to Saudi when Robert Connor took his place on the plane. Dons' 5-0 victory was helped by a Keith Edwards hat-trick. Even so the Highland Leaguers made life tough for Dons for quite a lot of the game. They restricted the scoreline to an early goal by Gary Hackett to keep it 1-0 at half-time. Edwards might have had a double hat-trick by the end, however, having hit the crossbar and missed two or three possible chances before completing his threesome.
Once Dons got on top it became hard work for Keith who were obviously playing against a higher grade of opposition to the norm. Brian Grant scored the other goal.
