THE YOUNG DONS played some very good football to score a comfortable 3-0 win over Ayr United A last Saturday and maintain their unbeaten record at Pittodrie this season. The acid test will come for their Reserve League championship hopes over the next few weeks when the young Dons meet the four teams above them in the table - Partick Thistle Celtic, Dundee United and Kilmarnock. We beat the Celtic colts 2-0 at Parkhead last season and, on their current form. I think the boys could just about do it again.
Last Saturday was the first time the opposition had failed to score against the young Dons in the league this season, and all credit to Andy Geoghegan for a first-class display. He had luck on his side on occasion, but deserved it. One of his saves in the second half was right out of the top drawer. Ayr United A won the title last season and are still a good side despite their unimpressive record this season. We were able to take their measure with a strong all-round performance. John Craig's distribution was immaculate and, if Joe Smith keeps up the improvement in his midfield play, he'll be knocking on the first-team door before he's very much older. Joe, incidentally, was officially credited with the second goal which entered the net via an Ayr defender. Jimmy Smith turned in another tidy play at left back and Ian Hair gave little away at centre half, getting good support from Tommy Wilson. George Buchan produced one of his best displays of the season as attack leader laying the ball off frequently with his head and he put the young Dons on the victory trail with the opening goal.
Bertie Miller needs a little more belief in his own capabilities to show his true potential, but he was on the spot to force the ball over the line for our third goal - and his sixth for the reserves this season.
