THE YOUNG DONS need seven points from their last six games to make certain of winning the Reserve League championship for the first time since I was a member of the Pittodrie playing staff way back in the mid-1950s. With Partick Thistle A slipping in the last week or two, Hibs A have emerged as our leading rivals for the title?but they are six points behind for the same number of games. After scoring a good victory at Tannadice on the Friday night, the young Dons were not so impressive in beating St. Johnstone A 1 ?0 at Pittodrie last Tuesday. Perhaps the knowledge that the title is now within our grasp was at the back of some of our youngsters' minds, and it was just as well that experienced men like Henning Boel and Ian Taylor were on hand to steady the ship.
Henning looked more at home in the middle of the defence but he was right up in the firing line to score the all-important goal in the 24th minute. Taylor had an excellent game in mid-field, keeping the ball flowing towards Saints' penalty area. We were a wee bit shaky at full back compared with previous performances and at times the young Dons played the ball too much in the air to striker Bobby Street, making it easy for Saints' defence, with Highlander Ian Macdonald their top man.
It has not been possible to give Andy Kerr many outings on the right wing this season but he had a serviceable game against Saints.
