Morgan Puts Damper On Wee Dons
THE YOUNG DONS have not lost a game since February 5 and they should face Ayr United A at Somerset Park today with much more confidence than would have been the case at the turn of the year. Ayr have established a clear lead at the top of the Reserve League since their smash-and-grab win at Pittodrie last October - they scored two goals in the last two minutes - but we could have a surprise or two in store for them.
I think it's fair to say that Hearts A, another title-chasing side, had to thank international goalkeeper Jim Cruickshank for earning a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie last Saturday. It was unfortunate that most of our chances fell to the off-form Joe Smith, for we deserved more goals than the equaliser scored by George Buchan. It was one of George's best games for the Reserves this season. Top man in our ranks was Chic McLelland, who is revelling in the sweeper's
role and also breaks well from defence. Chic has improved considerably in the air
this season and could be challenging for a first-team place next term.
Tommy McMillan gave a skillful, sound display at centre half and there was a big improvement in the play of Billy Williamson at right back.
Ian Hair had to plough a lone furrow at times as attack leader. At this stage of his career, he needs a lot more support than he received from his inside men.
For those spectators who were foxed by the appearance of two No. 12s for Hearts,
an explanation. Hearts inside right Neil Murray, the former Ross County player, was given permission to exchange his soaked shirt for a fresh No. 12 jersey. When in the closing stages of the game Hearts' listed substitute. Gordon Welch, came on for their No. 7, he took over the right winger's jersey. How unfortunate that the 15-year-old Gordon should fracture a leg in the dying seconds of the game.
