Elgin City 5 - 3 Aberdeen

Aberdeen and District League

01/11/1924 | KO:

'A' Team's Failure At Elgin

It was a happy crowd at Borough Briggs that saw Elgin beat Aberdeen "A" to the tune of 5 goals to 3. The game was under Aberdeen and District League auspices, and when the teams met at Pittodrie earlier in the season the points were secured by the homesters, the score on that occasion being 2-1. At Elgin on Saturday, however, the visiting eleven got more than they, perhaps, bargained for. With the possible exception of Cameron, who was quite obviously out of position in the outside right berth, there was not one of the home players but who was at the top his form. Jamieson, in particular, gave a great display at centre-forward. Before 15 minutes the game had elapsed they were leading by two clear goals, and from then right to the end of the match they held their opponents well in check. Not until the last five minutes of the game did the visitors secure their two final goals, both of which were snap goals, neither being really worked for. The previous score of 5-1 would not in any way have flattered the City - they were well worth every goal of it. The Aberdeen attack, which worked quite well in outfield, lacked the necessary sting at close quarters to be effective. Cunningham between the uprights gave quite a good account of himself, and saved his side time and again from a much heavier defeat. The visitors took their defeat somewhat badly, and at times allowed their tempers too much play. Mr. A Penny, Huntly, had charge of the game, and his decisions did not all find favour with the crowd.
