A Premier Reserve League meeting with Dundee United, following hard on the heels of the setback at Parkhead, saw the young Dons suffer their second successive 1-0 defeat last Saturday, but there was cause for some optimism in the Pittodrie game, despite the disappointing scoreline.
Coach Willie Miller is not an easy man to satisfy, but he regarded the overall performance against United, almost invariably one of the strongest reserve outfits, as a step in the right direction. "The team are making progress and showing an improvement on last season, although there's still a lot of work to be done", he said. "We seem to have sorted out the earlier defensive problems, but, on this occasion, our finishing let us down. The secret is in getting everything working together."
An encouraging feature, however, was that the Aberdeen side created enough chances to feel that they deserved at least a share of the points. Striker Andy Gibson was a case in point. He played well, getting into good positions, but his confident scoring touch of earlier in the season appeared to desert him temporarily and he missed a couple of reasonable chances.
