hall of fame dinner

29 March 2004 12:21

Pittodrie Stadium hosted an auspicious occasion last night as six Dons legends were inducted into the Aberdeen Hall of Fame. The Inaugural Hall of Fame Dinner saw Teddy Scott, Fred Martin, Willie Miller, Drew Jarvie, John Hewitt and Jim Bett honoured in what was a fitting occasion. AFC Sporting Events presented the event where guests enjoyed a three-course meal as well as being entertained by guest speaker Joe Harper (How many Dons Legends can you have in one room?) and comedian Jimmy Bright.

So the Hall of Fame has now been officially opened and here is a brief summary of the achievements of the first six members of this exclusive club.

Teddy Scott
Retired from Pittodrie last August after serving the club for an astonishing 49 years. Following his playing career Teddy returned to become the Dons trainer, coach and eventually kit man, serving under no less than 15 Aberdeen managers during his Pittodrie career.

Fred Martin
Fred joined the Dons in 1946 as an Inside Forward, but converted to goalkeeper during his National Service. He became the last line of defence for the Dons in the early fifties and played for Scotland in their first World Cup campaign of 1954. Fred went on to win a championship medal and League Cup winners medal in 1955 and made three Scottish Cup final appearances for the club. Fred made 291 appearances for the club.

Willie Miller
Aberdeen captain during the club's greatest era led the Dons to no less than 11 major trophies between 1976-1986 and spent his entire professional career with Aberdeen during a 20-year association with the club. Voted the greatest ever Don during last year's Centenary celebrations. Made 797 appearances, scoring 32 goals.

Drew Jarvie
Drew is one of a select few Aberdeen players who has scored more than 100 goals for the club. A club record buy from Airdrie in 1972, Drew went on to serve the club in a variety of roles bringing through some of Pittodrie's finest young talent for many years. Made 286 appearances scoring an incredible 131 goals.

John Hewitt
John will always be remembered for scoring the winning goal in the 1983 ECWC Final against Real Madrid. He scored many vital goals for the Dons during his Pittodrie career including a brace in the 1986 Scottish Cup Final against Hearts. Made 364 appearances for the Dons scoring 89 goals.

Jim Bett
One of the most gifted midfield players ever to grace Pittodrie, Jim was a vital part of the post-Gothenburg Aberdeen side that kept the silverware coming to Pittodrie. Scottish international with 25 caps and was recently voted in the greatest ever Dons XI Hall of Fame side. Made 338 appearances scoring 47 goals.
