The Scottish Cup is the Club's most often claimed major honour, with 7 trophies to our name. The first came in 1947 when Stan Williams scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Hibernian. Four Cup Finals defeats would follow, but 1970 would see the trophy was claimed for a second time as Eddie Turnbull's tactical mastery saw Celtic defeated by three to one. Two goals from Derek "Cup Tie" Mackay, and a penalty from King Joey Harper make Martin Buchan the youngest captain to lift the trophy. A 12-year wait would follow before the Club went on a remarkable run of 23 games unbeaten in the Cup, with 3 trophy wins resulting. Dundee United would end the Dons proud run but they would bounce back in the following season, defeating Hearts 3-0 in the final and bringing the Cup back to Pittodrie for an amazing 4th time in 5 seasons. 1989/90 would bring double cup success, and after defeating Rangers in the League Cup Final the Dons would lift the Scottish Cup by virtue of a nail-biting 9-8 penalties victory over the other half of the Old Firm. |
