Aberdeen kicked off, facing a strong sun, and were soon hovering round Thompson. Hannah relieved, and sent the Saint Johnstone left wing away. Mutch had to concede a corner, which Robertson cleared in masterly fashion. Mutch saved a grand shot from Clinton at 6 yards range. Sampson caught the rebound, and Mutch again brought off a brilliant save from amidst a group of players. The homesters bombarded the Aberdeen goal, Mutch alone keeping them out. From a corner Anderson gave his side the lead. Before the interval Thompson had to save a swift shot from the Aberdeen centre.

The saints continued to have the better of the exchanges, but try as they might they could not get the ball passed Mutch. After severe pressure Mutch had to acknowledge himself beaten for a second time, Anderson again securing the point with a shot which gave the custodian no chance. Mutch required attention when he injured himself saving a shot.
