Los Angeles Wolves 6-5 Washington Whips

Everything leading up to this final match pointed to the likelihood of a very tight match, with most pundits reckoning that a single goal would decide the outcome of this North American championship playoff.
Nothing could have prepared the almost 18,000 crowd nor the TV audience for what they were about to witness.

Two strong, physical, aggressive and attack minded teams set about each other, both intent on becoming champions and holders of the President's Cup and neither prepared to yield an inch nor give quarter throughout the game. The Whips played much of the game at a numerical disadvantage after Jinky Smith was sent off for kicking Dave Wagstaffe after 32 minutes.
Tied at 4-4 after ninety minutes, the teams had to go into extra time, during which Bobby Clark saved a penalty, and ended at 5-5 before the sudden death quest for a Golden Goal that would decide the match. Sadly for the Dons the goal came for Wolves who carried off the President's Cup. After the presentation and speeches, the two teams shared the lap of honour as though they were old pals.
