In November 1961 the Club Programme described him as:
"A dour, fighting Fifer on the field, George Kinnell, the Dons centre half and acting captain, is a cheery chappie off the field. A product of Crossgates Primrose, his strength in the tackle and never-say-die spirit attracted the attention of the Aberdeen scouts early in 1959.
He was signed as a professional by the Pittodrie club after playing a trial at wing half for Aberdeen Reserves against Falkirk A in February, 1959. During his term with the Dons George has turned out for the first team at full back as well as wing half, but has finally established himself as a sound and reliable centre half and also a dependable penalty kicker.
He is 5ft. 11in. in height, weighs 11st. 51b., is married, and his hobbies are dancing and golf."

In the latter stages of season 1962-1963, George was even played up front in an effort to strengthen the forward line.
Following two transfer requests, George moved to Stoke City in November 1963 and played in the 1964 Football League Cup Final for Stoke City.
Later had a brief spell at Oldham before joining Sunderland in 1966, moving on to Middlesbrough in 1968, a year later moving to play in Australia where he played for Juventus, Melbourne, at one stage alongside another former Don - Ally Sandison.
After football George eventually returned to live in Aberdeen.
