The left sided defender came through the ranks at Wellington Phoenix before joining Eredivisie side Willem II and it was there he earned his sole All Whites cap before he returned to his first club in 2020 and made 38 appearances.
His performances earned him a move to Newcastle Jets before Central Coast signed him in February and he went on to help them win the A-League Grand Final in their most recent season.
He became Aberdeen's 9th signing of a busy summer with his arrival officially announced on 11th August 2023. Although he made a good impression when he played, he was unable to displace Jack MacKenzie and when the Club also signed Alexander Jensen, it was agred that he would go out on loan to find more pitch minutes. On 28th January 2025 it was confirmed that he would go on loan to Greek club Athens Kallithea for the remainder of the season.
On 19th June 2025 the Dons announced that James would be leaving the Club on 1st July to join Brisbane Roar.
