Joined the Dons from Livingston FC where he had been for four seasons, two of them as captain. He had started his career with Dumbarton before joining Motherwell where he was loaned out to Stenhousemuir (twice) and Dumbarton, then joined Stenhousemuir for a full season before trasferring to Ayr United from 2014 to 2017 and then Walsall from 2017 to 2019. He signed up for a two year deal at Pittodrie. On first October 2024 Nicky was honoured with a call-up to the Scotland squad. A new two and a half year contract was announced on 11th October 2024. He celebrated with a late substitute appearance for Scotland against Portugal on 15th October. He kept that personal momentum going by writing a line in the history books when he scored Aberdeen's 8500th competetive goal against Rangers on 30th October. At the end of the season, he played an important part in defending against the Celtic onslaught in the Scottish Cup Final and deservedly earned his winners medal.
