Started his pro career at Dunfermline under Jock Stein but was released by new manager Willie Cunningham let him go after a few first team appearances. Former team mate Harry Melrose recommended him to Aberdeen under Eddie Turnbull. Minor injuries hampered Pat's career at Pittodrie but he was a member of the Washinton Whips touring party in the summer of 1967, having had to rearrange his wedding plans so that he could go. One of Pat's claim's to fame is that he was Aberdeen's first ever official substitute in a League Cup semi-final against Rangers. There was a mild controversy about this as he was used tactically rather than because of an injury.
