If ever there was a stellar signing, this was it. Ian Porterfield signed Nicholas from Arsenal for £400,000 in the New Year of 1988, and immediately lifted the Dons' flagging spirits. In his Pittodrie debut against Dunfermline, 20,000 turned out to see the former Celtic star. A gifted striker, Nicholas was already a Scottish international by the time he arrived at Pittodrie, and went on to become a favourite at Pittodrie. Played in the side that won the Cup double in 1989-90, and began to form an exciting partnership with Hans Gillhaus that was touted, as the most feared in the game. Moved back to his first club Celtic after the Dons had beaten the Parkhead side in the 1990 Cup Final. After hanging up his boots, Charlie went on to be a successful football pundit on television.
