Ernie was somewhat unfortunate to be at Pittodrie at the same time as Bobby Clark whose form kept Ernie on the sidelines for most of the time. However, he did have an opportunity to star in seasons 68/69 and 69/70 thanks in part to Bobby's loss of form, but Ernie showed beyond any doubt that he was a fine keeper and his strong displays earned him a Scotland cap against the Irish Republic.
