Stephen came up through the youth and reserve ranks with the Dons before breaking into the first team in April 1990. he became a key member of the defence under Willie Miller but eventually became a big-money transferee to Glasgow Rangers at the end of season 1994/95. Thereafter he was plagued by injury and moved around a number of clubs before retiring from the playing side in 2002 and going into coaching, principally with Dunfermline Athletic and then the Fife Elite Football Academy.
