Britain's "cold cure" research centre at Harvard Hospital, Salisbury, wants a "guinea pig" squad of Aberdonians to go into voluntary exile in the lonely North Scottish isle of Roan to help science in its battle against the common cold germ. The volunteers must be men between the ages of twenty and forty. They will receive no pay during the short exile on Roan, but all their expenses will be paid. The "guinea pigs" will be inoculated with a cold germ before leaving Aberdeen. On arrival at Roan they will be brought into contact with volunteers free from colds. In this way scientists hope to study the entire cycle of the common cold and its effects on normally healthy people.
One Centre Aberdeen has been chosen to supply the "guinea pigs" because, said Dr T. Summerville, medical officer at Harvard Hospital, last night: "We want all our volunteers in one centre because of accommodation and travel difficulties. Men living within a reasonable distance of Aberdeen will be accepted if they come forward and are found suitable." Selected volunteers will be interviewed by Dr Summerville in Aberdeen and inoculated with colds either at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary or at Aberdeen University.
