ABERDEEN DIDN'T SCINTILLATE

But Secured 5-1 Victory

THE Dons, with the assistance of Beattie and Mutch (Preston N.E.) and Dickie (Blackburn Rovers), did not play the scintillating football expected at Pittodrie on Saturday.

A dogged St Bernards team made the Aberdeen side fight for the points, and it was only in the closing stages that the home team were able to make the margin victory decisive.
Undoubtedly the Dons were superior individually and collectively in football craft, but with their more rugged style of play St Bernards were never subdued.
The Aberdeen forwards indulged in too much pattern-weaving. The fact that they held only a 2-1 lead at the interval tells its own story. Donaldson opened the scoring for the Dons in ten minutes, when he beat Matthews after Mutch had pulled the defence out of position.
In twenty-seven minutes J. Wilkie equalised. He found the net after Lyon and Beattie had failed to intercept a high ball. McCall restored Aberdeen's lead five minutes later when Mutch put him in possession from a cross from Strauss.

POSITIONS CHANGED

Eighteen minutes after the start of the second half Strauss and Dickie took the ball through for Mutch to find the net. Shortly after this Lyon received a leg injury and had to go to outside left, Strauss taking the inside berth and McCall going to centre half.
In the closing quarter of an hour Aberdeen got two more goals. Dickie got the first when Wood headed out a cross from the right and Mutch the other from a penalty awarded when he was brought down as he was going through.

BEST OF "SAINTS"

In view of the fact that they fielded two junior backs, the St. Bernards defence acquitted itself creditably. Wood, at centre-half, was the visitors' outstanding player.
