McLelland Hits Winner
LAST Saturday's 1-0 home victory over Hibs hoisted the young Dons into the top half of the Reserve League and despite all the disappointments this season has provided, the opportunity is there for the Pittodrie colts to finish in a respectable position, for they still have to play six of the seven sides above them in the table. The only disappointing fact about last week's victory was the narrow margin, for the young Dons played well enough to have scored several more goals. And they did play probably one of their best footballing displays of the season. One does not have to look far to find the reason for the big improvement on the previous week's defeat by Motherwell. The introduction of the experienced George Buchan and Ian Taylor worked wonders. Their high work-rate set a good example, which, to their credit, their team-mates responded.
Chic McLelland, I thought, was the best player on the field and it was fitting that he should score the only goal of the game. Our trialist goalkeeper, one of many this season, was Scott Yuill of Shettleston, who, curiously enough, have provided us with two other keepers already this term. Although in the end Hibs got off lightly. I would like to single out Bertie Auld's performance for the visitors. He provided a perfect example of what we have lacked this season ? a seasoned campaigner who could establish some sort of order and fluency with his astute use of the ball.
