ARBROATH SHOWN NO MERCY AFTER FINE START
Apart from a short spell in the early stages, the Gayfield reserve side never looked like offering serious opposition to the Young Dons in this Reserve League match at Pittodrie, Aberdeen. The homesters were superior in all departments, and had they chosen could have scored more goals. There was some excitement in the early stages when W. Scott got through to beat Anderson, only for Duncanson to equalise from a penalty. This roused the homesters, and Brady smashed a great shot into the net, following which W. Scott left Anderson helpless from a free kick. Another goal by Brady and brilliant counter by Baird completed the first half scoring, but afterwards Aberdeen "A" toyed with the visitors. W. Scott started the rush with a fine grounder into the corner of the net, and later he scored again in between two class goals by Brady, who was making the most of his chances. The Arbroath side then had a brief spell of attack, and Moir, the Mugiemoss centre-forward, twice tested Kelly. Towards the end the homesters were again in the ascendancy, and after Williams had missed a penalty W. Scott and Hume took the total to eleven. Under the circumstances, criticism of the home side is unnecessary, but mention must be made Kelly, who distinguished himself with fine saves when the visitors did threaten danger. All the others played well. Arbroath "A" fought an uphill battle most of the time, with Vannet and Duncanson always striving to turn the tide.Source: Press & Journal, 12th September 1938
