SUCCESSFUL RALLY WHEN ALL SEEMED LOST
A demonstration of what a team can do when urged on by its home crowd was given in the Reserve League game at Pittodrie on Saturday. The visitors led 2-0 with only fifteen minutes left for play, but in response to the enthusiastic shouts of a 5000 crowd, who had braved a bitterly cold wind to watch the match, the homesters rallied and won the day. Rangers had the breeze behind them in the first half, and with such advantage should have been more than one goal ahead. This was well taken by Turnbull in twenty-five minutes. Standing well back, he sent a cross by Main out of Kelly's reach. The centre took advantage of slackness in the home defence to notch a second goal shortly after the restart, and to all intents and purposes the homesters were a well-beaten side. Hume scraped home a goal following a corner by Dunlop, and the homesters staged a terrific revival. It seemed that Jenkins would baulk them of another goal, as he had some wonderful saves, but ultimately Pattillo tried a ground shot, which just got home at the far post. The fat was in the fire now, and in the gathering darkness play was difficult to follow. Five minutes from time Woodburn handled a low cross by Warnock, and Adey took the kick to crash the ball high into the net. Best for the winners were Adey, Dunlop, Waddell, Laing, Warnock, and Williams.Source: Press & Journal, 19th December 1938
