AFC Women return to winning ways with Kilmarnock victory

Aberdeen bounced back from last week's defeat in the best way possible as they turned in a dominant performance to see off Kimarnock 3-0. The win keeps the Dons five points clear at the top of SWPL2.

Co-managers Stuart Bathgate and Emma Hunter made two changes to the home side as Bailley Collins and the returning Amy Strath took their place in the starting line up with Natasha Bruce and Lauren Gordon taking a spot on the bench.

The hosts started well but it wasn't until the 18th minute that they had their first attempt at goal when Chloe Gover shot wide after being set up by Eva Thomson. Bailley Collins followed that up a few minutes later with a deflected shot that went straight at the Killie keeper.

The pressure was beginning to build on the visiting defence as the league leaders continued to dominate possession. Loren Campbell had an effort saved at the near post whilst Thomson saw her goal-bound shot blocked.

Collins again went close on the half-hour mark but her curling effort went wide of the target. At the other end Killie almost grabbed a shock lead. Kirsty O'Brien found herself on the end of a long ball and her lay-off found Abby Robinson who passed up a great chance by shooting wide.

That attempt was a blip for the home side as they went in back in search of a goal to match their dominance in possession. Kelly Forrest found Bayley Hutchison with an incisive forward pass. The striker then played in Francesca Ogilvie on the right but her cross was just too high for Collins in the penalty area.

Aberdeen almost got a deserved goal four minutes from the interval. Chloe Gover broke forward after a rare Killie attack and carried the ball into the penalty area before setting up Ogilvie who in turn laid the ball to Collins who saw her shot blocked as Killie scrambled clear the rebound.

Despite the home side having almost all the possession Robinson's chance for Killie showed they were still in the game as the sides went in level at the break.

The reds started the second half as they had finished the first and almost grabbed the lead through Gover's low shot just minutes after the restart. Eilidh Shore then tried ger luck with a curling shot from distance which went straight int the arms of the Killie keeper.

The deadlock was finally broken on 58 minutes as the league leaders finally went in front. Gover's run down the left wing carried the ball toward the penalty box where she played in THOMSON who slammed the ball high into the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Johan Fraser replaced Gover on the hour mark and was almost involved in a goal just minutes later. A one-two between Fraser and Campbell saw the latter cut the ball back from the byline for Hutchison who fired over the bar from the centre of goal.

Chloe Fitzpatrick then made her first appearance since returning to the Dons as she replaced Collins after 72 minutes.

The Dons continued to threaten to add to their lead as the half went on. Shore released Hutchison through the middle with a well measured pass but the keeper did well. rushing out of her box to thwart the striker.

The home side finally made the scoreline more comfortable a they added a second with four minutes remaining. Substitute Fraser's short pass sent HUTCHISON into the penalty area and she made no mistake with a low finish into the net.

Captain Forrest then saved her side from losing a goal two minutes later as she got back to clear in front of an open goal after Killie sub Resdie had taken the ball round Dons keeper Gail Gilmour. That was a rare sight of goal for the visitors though and they would fall further behind before the end.

Shore and Ogilvie had both had long range attempts go wide in the closing minutes but the third goal came in fortuitous fashion. Full-back CAMPBELL found herself high up the field deep into stoppage time and her low cross towards the front post somehow evaded the Killie goalkeeper to find the net and complete the scoring at 3-0.

REACTION:

Jessica BROADRICK: "It was massive for us to come back from last week. We were annoyed and disappointed and it just wasn't acceptable last week. We trained hard this week and we knew we could turn it around and we're ready for anything that can come at us in the league now. I think we worked well as a defensive unit today. I was in a different position today at full-back and I love playing there. I like the freedom to get forward and try and get involved further up the pitch. On the whole we were much better than last weekend and we're happy to win and get a clean sheet."

Johan FRASER: "We had a good discussion after last week to work through some of the things that went wrong, especially defensively. One of our main objectives today was to get a clean sheet and to be more solid at the back and more composed throughout the team and I think we did all that. We were pretty comfortable for most of the game to be honest and we put a few wrongs right today. I think it's the sign of a good team to comeback when you haven't played well. Last week we dropped well below the standards we've set for ourselves so it was good to get back to that high standard today and we'll look to do the same going into next week."
