.

This was by far the shock of the round, as Airdrie simply outfought the Dons in-every department to deservedly move into the next round. McCabe gave Airdrie the perfect start when he shot past Leighton from 15 yards after 3 minutes. The shock opener, inspired the Diamonds and only a fingertip push over the bar prevented them increasing the score in the 8th minute. A Stark header, with Aberdeen's 1st attack, in 11 minutes, brought the scores level. The home side's direct approach, obviously sticking to manager Ally McLeod's instructions pinned Aberdeen back and when Flood scored after 33 minutes the writing was on the wall. Yule completed the scoring 10 minutes into the second half and although the introduction of Grant and Wright by manager Alex Ferguson, livened up Aberdeen's approach the damage had been done, and the Dons were out of the Cup.
