Jim Leighton led the Dons out at McDiarmid Park for the first time this season. The game started slowly with neither side really getting on top. St Johnstone came close through Lowndes and new signing Jones, but they couldn't beat Leighton who was holding everything comfortably.
New signing Arild Stavrum found himself in good positions to have a shot on goal many times, but none of his shots really troubled Alan Main. Stavrum came close after brilliant work on the left hand side from Thomas Solberg, but his glancing header went just wide of the mark. Stavrum then found himself with a chance of his left foot, but he couldn't get his shot on target.
Half Time: 0-0
The Dons suffered a blow with barely five minutes of the second half underway, when Thomas Solberg had to come off due to a knock he picked up following a clash with Nathan Lowndes. He was replaced by Derek Whyte, who has just come back from a lengthy injury.
Aberdeen suffered another blow when David Lilley had to be stretchered off, he was replaced by Jamie Buchan.
The breakthrough in this match finally came in the 26th minute of the second half, when Andy Dow scored his third of the season to put Aberdeen 1-0 ahead.
That lead only lasted 3 minutes however, as new saints signing Greame Jones found space in the box to make it 1-1.
Robbie Winters later found himself through on goal with only Main to beat, but the St Johnstone and Scotland keeper stood up well to block his shot.
In the last few minutes, Winters had another chance but once again Main stopped well.
