Arild Stavrum came close to giving Aberdeen the perfect start after just two minutes, when his low drive was well saved by ex-Rangers and Scotland international Andy Goram. The next real chance came some half an hour later, when Thomas Solberg had a header go over from a corner kick. Darren Mackie showed a brilliant fighting spirit throughout, and he forced Well keeper Andy Goram into a rushed clearance that resulted in a Don's corner, which came to nothing.
Aberdeen came close again just two minutes after the interval, when a teasing cross from striker Robbie Winters caused panic in the Motherwell defence, until Greig Strong finally cleared. Motherwell nearly made it 1-0 moments later, when John Spencer had a goalbound effort cleared off the line by Rachid Balabed.
In the 53rd minute Kevin Mcnaughton had a shot well saved, and in the 72nd minute, Derek Young produced a brilliant shot that was equally well saved by Goram. Aberdeen persisted to pressurise the Well defence, and just as it looked like ending in a 0-0 bore draw, DEREK YOUNG persisted after good work from Winters and McNaughton, and finally netted to make it 1-0 to Aberdeen.
