Young Dons ease through in cup.

Aberdeen kicked off their SFA Youth cup campaign for 2004-05 with a win against Inverness although the young Dons were made to work hard for it. In a tight first half there were few chances for either side with the visitors going closest with an effort in the first five minutes that Dons keeper Kelly did well to save. Aberdeen eventually came more into the game with Macaulay and Bagshaw both shooting wide Aberdeen were forced to make a substitution in the 23rd minute when Brian Neill came on for Ciaran Donnelly after the midfielder dislocated his shoulder. The Dons best chance of the first half fell to Andrew Bagshaw on 34 minutes. A goal kick found Macaulay who brilliantly set up Bagshaw who steadied himself well, slipped the ball past the advancing keeper but his shot went inches wide.
In the second half Aberdeen stepped up the pace with Bagshaw and Macaulay starting to cause the visitors problems. Aberdeen looked to have taken the lead when David Donald hit a long-range shot but his effort hit the underside of the bar and agonisingly bounced back into play. The Dons finally made the break through after 65 minutes. Bagshaw made a good run and crossed into the box. The ball eventually broke for Kiely who made no mistake from close range. On 73 minutes the young Irish striker then scored a superb individual second when he beat a couple of defenders then hit a shot low into the net. Just when Aberdeen looked to be cruising into the next round ex-don Rory McAllister hit a superb shot from 20 yards past Kelly in the 78th minute to throw the visitors a life line. However three minutes later David Donald got the goal he deserved and restored the Dons two-goal advantage when he picked the ball up in midfield and hit a shot from 30 yards low into the corner to seal the win.
After the match Redweb caught up with Neil Cooper for his post match reaction. "All credit to Inverness in the first half they played really well. We played them last year in the Youth Cup and I was expecting this to be a similar game. I warned the players just because we beat them 3-0 in the league last month not to take anything for granted, as this was a new game. "In the second half we passed the ball better and this seemed to settle the players as they get nervous playing at Pittodrie. Willie John Kiely did really well with his two goals but then we get sloppy and allowed them to get back into the game however we did bounce back and David Donald got the third goal. We then finished the game strongly but we need to play well for the whole 90 minutes rather than just the last 45 although I'm obviously pleased with their second half performance and getting through to the next round."
