Aberdeen won the toss, and Arbroath kicked off with the wind in their favour. Within the first minute Johnstone had to kick out a shot from Hall, but the home right wing then collared the ball, and made off in the direction of the Aberdeen goal. The Aberdonians, however, again took up the running and Johnstone was twice called upon to clear feeble shots. The Maroons then had a try, and Brown drove the ball into Barrett's arms. A foul was granted Arbroath close on the penalty line, but J. Petrie kicked past. Aberdeen gradually work their way towards the home goal, and the ball was netted, but an offside infringement lost them the chance. The attack was again taken up by the maroons, and Middleton tested Barrett, while the following minute Gray sent in a fine shot from the left. The Aberdeen forwards attacked, and Johnstone wrote off a difficult save from Smith. It was a Arbroath stern now are to attack, and Middleton beat Barrett with a swift shot after half an hour's play. Middleton, the Arbroath inside right, had to be carried off the field owing to his having sustained an injury. Towards half-time Aberdeen attacked, but Arbroath kept them in check.
Early in the second period Johnstone was called upon to save a difficult shot from the right. Arbroath then got into close quarters, but Gray was declared offside. Dorward sent in a swift shot, which Barrett caught in his arms. Ten minutes from time Arbroath were awarded a penalty through Gray having been fouled when on a likely run, but Clark failed to convert. The Maroons, however, showed determination, and Gray a minute later beat Barrett for the second time. Play in the closing stages was exciting.
