Aberdeen 2 - 1 Fraserburgh

The final round of the Fleming Charity Shield competition was played at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, on Saturday afternoon between Aberdeen and Fraserburgh Town. Ideal weather prevailed, and there was a fair attendance of spectators. Teams:- Aberdeen: King; Hannah, Hume; Davidson, Wilson, Macfarlane; H. Murray, Soye, Hay, J. Edgar, Lennie. Fraserburgh: G. Williamson, W Thain, A. Purdie; J. Crawford, J Thain, W. Alexander; J. Birnie, J. Burnett, G Gray, J. McNab, W. J. Witts. Referee - Mr. A watt, Aberdeen. At the start Aberdeen showed nice combination, and for a time had complete control of the game. The visiting defence was hard pressed, but they did their work well. Aberdeen were continually pressing, and although they had many good opportunities to score, wild shooting, combined with a certain amount of carelessness, spoiled their chances. Aberdeen, although having most of the game, were one goal down after 30 minutes' play. One of the local backs endeavoured to head a cross away from goal, but, instead of sending the ball up the field, he sent it to wards his own goal. Before he could turn round Burnett dashed past him and scored. King was taken by surprise. The game was resumed with much vigour on both sides, and for a time play was very fast. Both teams worked hard, but Aberdeen were easily the superior lot, and it was no surprise when Hay equalised. Shortly before the interval Wilson gave Aberdeen the lead. The second half was keenly contested. Both goals had narrow escapes, but there was no more scoring. Aberdeen's seemed to be quite satisfied with their lead. He could undoubtedly have scored had the desired to do so, particularly towards the end of the game, when Fraser were began to show signs of being tired. The game was interesting to watch, although lacking in any special feature, and, considering the strong nature of the opposition, Fraserburgh gave a good display. The money taken at the gates and the sum realised from the sale of tickets amounted to about £25. At the end of the game Mr. D. B. Lothian, convener of the Charity Commission of the Aberdeenshire Football Association, presented this shield to J. Edgar, who captained the Aberdeen team for the day.

Year by year the attendance at the charity matches grows smaller and smaller. It cannot be said that the play is any worse than it was five or six years ago, when three times the sum of Saturday's takings would have been considered only a fair gate. It was poor encouragement to the players and committee to see such a beggarly show for a final tie - even though the play was unattractive. The players showed lack of interest also, and the play was not what could be called strenuous, but partook more of trickery and close dribbling than of the robust cup-tie order. Aberdeen played to the gallery, and worked the ball backwards and forwards, and only realised that goals were wanted when Fraserburgh Town made a splendid rush, and the outside left crossing beautifully, Hume scored against his own side. Hay finished a fine cross of Lennie's by putting his side level, and for a little bit the play was interesting. Once Aberdeen took the lead, it fell away, and the home side won by 2-1. At the conclusion Councillor, A. Milne introduced Mr D. B. Lothian, chairman of the Charity Committee, who presented the shield, Captain John Edgar accepting the shield for Aberdeen. The drawings were £25.
