The "A" team ought, perhaps, to have beaten Premier Reserve League newcomers Hamilton Academicals more decisively than 2-1 in their re-arranged Thursday night game recently.
Two more goals by Paul Wright brought the correct result but a late lapse in defensive concentration cost a goal towards the end. This produced a far narrower margin of victory than should have been the case, several good chances having gone astray. Once again the experienced John McMaster revealed his worth as an 'old head' among some of the younger players, organising things from midfield.
"We found the ground there quite difficult to play on because of its slope," confessed Scott. "There will be plenty of teams who find it difficult to get results there." Wright, who is normally more lethal at ground level, scored both his goals with his head, a fact that will do his confidence in this area no harm at all.
Gary Riddell and Tommy Mclntyre did extremely well as the central defensive partnership. At left back David Robertson was replaced by substitute Scott Harvie, a move that was not without significance. Both David and his namesake Ian were subsequently included in the first team squad for Saturday's First team game against Hamilton, the former getting a run as sub in place of Brian Mitchell.
