Hibs Out Of Luck

We made our exit from the Second XI Cup at Easter Road, when Hibs Reserves beat us by two goals to nil. We were unfortunate that through injury and illness we could only field eleven fit players and no substitutes. In a cup game we are only allowed to play signed players, so there was no way that we could play any of our provisionally signed players.
John Reilly travelled from Glasgow to Easter Road but was obviously suffering from influenza, (at the time of writing John is still confined to bed) so we had no option but to send him home again. Young Jim Rodgers who was to have been our substitute had to play on the right wing. We started off by playing up the slope and it wasn't long before big Davy Robb started causing trouble for the Hibs defence, with his strong forcing play. He had the ball in the net but was adjudged offside - it must have been a close decision.
Davy again was through the defence when McArthur the goalkeeper dived and pulled him down but all we got was a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. George Campbell also had a goal chalked off and we had a good claim for a penalty when John McMaster was scythed down inside the penalty area. Our defence had some anxious moments, especially when Hibs' Ally Scott was lurking around the penalty box, and as it turned out he scored both Hibs' goals. Young Alex McLeish played well at centre half and was well supported by Neil Cooper, with Derek Fraser giving one of his best displays at left back. John McMaster gave his usual workman like display and Doug Rougvie in midfield was always in the thick of things. Overall it was a fair performance from us and if the breaks had gone our way we might have been in the final.
