Simpson Scores For Reserves

Progress in the Premier Reserve League continues to be rather unpredictable with disappointing results cropping up periodically to prevent a push up the table.
Among these was an extremely disappointing reverse at Motherwell caused by the most dramatic defensive collapse coach Teddy Scott can ever recall. Dons were sitting 'comfortably' and perhaps complacently on a 2-1 lead with only 15 minutes to go ... yet lost by an agonising 5-2. Motherwell were allowed to hit four goals in five minutes, a spell which prompted much searching of memories for a comparable decline.
"It must be some sort of record," said Teddy. "I certainly cannot recall seeing anything like it." He added "You can only put it down to a sudden loss of concentration with the game seemingly won." That's clearly a lesson that every footballer needs to learn the hard way. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the heavy defeat was that Dons appeared to have a strong team out!
Another embarrassing feature was that the way had been cleared by a lead set up by Stevie Gray as early as the first 30 seconds of the game. A fine goal it was, too, as Ian Robertson created the chance with a good pass. The equaliser was the first of a whole crop of poor goals Dons were to concede on a dodgy day defensively. Biggest problem was in the defence's inadequate dealing with crossed balls into the box. In the midst of all this there was one shining consolation in that Neil Simpson, playing his second reserve game on his way back from injury, netted with a real cracker of a shot to make it 2-1. He also confirmed his increasing fitness despite slightly twisting his knee late on. No doubt it was wrongly assumed that this super Simpson was the winner... and the price was a high one.
