A football match on behalf of the unemployed fund was played yesterday at Pittodrie between teams representing Aberdeen and the University. The teams lined up as follows:- Aberdeen: Willocks; Murray, McNicoll; Hannah, Strang, Low; Robertson, Edgar, Newman, McAulay, Ruddiman. University: Clark; Brebner, Jamieson; Ross, Sangster, Gourlay; Marr, Macdonald, Anderson, Sutherland, Murray. Referee - Peter Simpson.
Aberdeen won the toss, and went down the field, and made a strong attack on the visitors' citadel, but they were soon at their own end where Willocks had to handle. The University players gave a splendid exhibition of the game, and were on several occasions very dangerous. Aberdeen then took up the attack, and the 'Varsity backs had a trying time of it in keeping the Aberdeen forwards at bay. At one time it appeared as if Aberdeen were going to score, for a splendid pass by Robertson allowed Edgar to get the ball, and the latter drove it with terrific force towards the goal, but Clark was equal to the occasion, and he fisted out in splendid fashion. Both teams were working hard for a point, but at half time no goals had been scored.
On resuming, the 'Varsity players went down the field in full force, and, overpowering the Aberdeen backs, scored the first goal of the game, Willocks being unable to save. After suffering disaster, the Aberdeen men put a lot of energy into their play, McAulay equalising a few minutes after. Both goals were then visited in turn, as the teams were anxious to secure the leading point. After an exciting struggle the game resulted in a draw of one goal each. The gate money amounted to £5, which will be handed over to the unemployed fund.
