Dons Beaten by Basement ICT

Aberdeen U19s went down to a disappointing defeat against Duncan Shearer's Inverness CT side this afternoon at Highland Football Academy. The Inverness U19s have a good record over the Dons youngsters having won the corresponding fixture last season and they also drew with the Dons at Balgownie earlier in this campaign.

The game was played on a poor pitch in strong winds. Aberdeen had the wind against them in the first half but defended very well. Goalkeeper Danny Rogers showed good handling on a number of occasions.

Aberdeen went ahead on 15 minutes when McManus, Smith and O'Neill all combined well. When the cross came in Watson landed up putting the ball into his own net.

The Dons continued to defend well and went in at the break 1-0 up. With the wind behind them in the second period Aberdeen would have maybe expected to go on and win the game but it was the home side that scored next on 56 minutes. From a long throw in the Dons defence failed to deal with the second ball and Skinner was on hand to put the ball in.

Then four minutes later Inverness took the lead. Storie allowed his man to run off him, the Dons defence failed to deal with the situation and Lang scored.

Aberdeen pushed hard for a deserved equaliser and should have had a penalty in the final minute. Substitute Dean Carse when through on goal and was taken down by the keeper. Incredibly local referee Douglas Ross penalised Carse for a foul. The decision seemed to completely baffle everyone.

Neil Cooper told RedWeb "The attitude was not right today. The players admitted as much after the game. If you don't start with the right attitude and at the wrong tempo it is very difficult to change things during the course of a game. Although we did not deserve to lose today, our performance was well below the standards we have set in recent weeks. The players were reminded about that after the game and left in doubt that they have to maintain the same level of performance, effort and attitude every week. Hopefully they will have learned something from today."
