Dons on top in Training Game

In the Dons latest training game Aberdeen this evening beat Arbroath 4-0 at Gayfield Park. Rory McArdle captained the side and played his second full 90 minutes in a week. The Northern Ireland International played well and is likely to be available on Sunday for the visit of Celtic. This will give Craig Brown more options in defence as Rory could start at centre half or right back.

The Dons lined up with Jason Brown in goal, McArdle at right back, Jamie Masson at left back and Joe Shaughnessy and Josh Magennis at centre half. Joe just returned to the club today after competing in the U19 European Championships in Romania with the Republic of Ireland U19s. Ireland made it through to the semi finals but were beaten by the eventual winners Spain. The Spanish youngsters beat the Czech Republic in the final after extra time.

In midfield was Ryan jack, who will serve his second game ban on Sunday after his red card against St Johnstone, and Jordon Brown with Ryan Fraser and Nicky Low on the wings. Up front Michael Paton was partnered by Mitch Megginson.

Aberdeen took the lead on 16 minutes. Josh Magennis took a good free kick which he hit low past the wall. Although keeper White was able to save it, the shot was too strong and Mitch Megginson followed up to score. It was 2-0 on 23 minutes. Michael Paton played a neat one two on the edge of the box with Jordon Brown before placing an excellent finish into the net.

It was three just shortly after the break. Nicky Low had a shot which deflected off the Arbroath defender Malcolm. Nicky as you would expect was claiming the goal but it did look like his effort was going just wide until the deflection which would therefore mean in was an own goal.

The scoring was complete on 64 minutes. Megginson, who had a fine game, had a shot which was again well saved by the keeper but spilled and Paton followed in to complete the scoring.

Towards the end a number of the Dons new U19s got a run out including the impressive Cameron Smith and Craig Storie. Two names to look out for in the months ahead.
