Folly Back as Young Dons Go Out on Pens

For the second year in a row Aberdeen crashed out of the Aberdeenshire Cup at the semi final stage on penalties. Scott Anderson got one over his employers as his Deveronvale side achieved a 5-3 victory on spot kicks. This was after the young Dons had come from 3-1 down to take the game to extra time.

The main story of the evening was though the return to action of Yoann Folly. The midfielder had been out with a serious leg injury since the game just after New Year with Dundee United. Yoann played about 70 minutes and during that time he looked good. His return would have impressed Craig Brown who watched on in the stands. Mohamed Chalali also got some much needed match action under his belt.

As for the game itself Deveronvale had taken a two goal lead through Mark Chisholm, who finished with a low shot into the corner and Mike McKenzie who scored from a free kick. Mitchel Megginson pulled one back from the penalty spot after Jordon Brown had been taken down. But two minutes before the break Scott Fraser put Vale further ahead after poor defending. Fraser was lucky to stay on the park after a clash with Megginson.

The Dons improved dramatically after the break. 2 minutes in and Jordon Brown scored with a low shot from the edge of the box. Aberdeen then had their chances, Jamie Masson hid the post after a fantastic run and Mitch Megginson's clever flick forced a brilliant save from former Don James Blanchard. The keeper his impressed every time the Dons have played against him.

Just when it looked like Aberdeen were heading out of the cup Megginson popped up in the box to score his second in the second minute of injury time.

The game went to extra time. Aberdeen as expected then dominated and Mohamed Chalali went close on a number of occasions and Mitch Megginson almost completed his hat-trick. However in the second period substitute Declan McManus was controversially sent off after picking up a second yellow card. Vale rallied and Lukasik produced three great saves in a row to take the game to penalties.

The home side scored first through Scott Fraser. Kyle Rae, Chris Blackhall and Kris Duncan then all scored as did the Dons Nicky Low, Clark Robertson and Mitch Megginson. Unfortunately Jack Grimmer put his spot kick just over the bar which allowed Grant Noble to step up and put Vale into the final.

The Highland League side probably deserved the win in what was a very entertaining game. Aberdeen were well below the standard they have set in the Youth League this season. Although Deveronvale had a physical presence they played some good football at times as well.
